Our team is asked about duct cleaning quite often. While Bell Brothers does not offer this service, we like to help our customers make an informed decision about whether to have their ducts cleaned. When we are working on your HVAC system, we can evaluate the cleanliness of your ducts and make a cleaning recommendation. Let’s talk about why you should consider having your ducts cleaned and what to expect from air duct cleaning services.

Is air duct cleaning important?
A clean duct system means cleaner air to breathe for you and your family. Just as bookshelves get dusty over time, so does duct work. It can also collect dirt, pollen, allergens and pet hair and dander — turning into a breeding ground for mold in your air ducts, which is then circulated in the air around your home. This significantly reduces your indoor air quality (IAQ) and comfort, especially for those who suffer from allergies, asthma or other respiratory conditions. Clean ducts also allow your HVAC system to run at maximum efficiency. Some ducts have been dirty from the time the home was built. It was commonplace— especially in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s — for builders not to clean the ducts after completing construction. Any debris in the duct work restricts airflow — requiring your HVAC system to work harder and less efficiently. And that means you pay more in energy costs. If you have a lot of dust on your furniture or soot stains around your registers, it’s probably a good sign that you should look into air duct cleaning services.

What is included in air duct cleaning services?
As with many services, you get what you pay for when it comes to duct cleaning. Low-priced services include taking off your registers and using a wet/dry vacuum to clean out the supply duct as far as it can reach and then cleaning out the return air grills.

This is not what you want.

Instead, the company should run a camera through the duct work to show you the current condition and then the condition after the cleaning. They will blow air into one end of the system while sucking it out the other. This ensures that all the dirt is contained within the duct system and is not blowing out the registers into your home. Once finished, the ducts should look brand new.

How much does air duct cleaning cost?
The average cost for air duct cleaning is between $400-$800. The price is typically determined by the size of your home, the number of ducts and their configuration. A good duct cleaning will last five to 10 years. So while the service may cost several hundred dollars, it’s most likely a one- or two-time expense while you live in your home.
