How to Improve Indoor Air Quality and Reduce Allergens in Your Home

By Jason Gassmann, President
Indoor air quality (IAQ) inside your home plays an important role in your comfort and health. Improving indoor air quality can help reduce allergens in your home – creating a healthier and more comfortable home. Dirt, dust mites, mold, spores, pollen and pet dander are all types of allergens that impact your home’s indoor air quality. Poor IAQ can also be caused by the everyday activities that take place in your home – like cooking and cleaning.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , scientific evidence has shown that even in large cities the air within our homes and other indoor spaces can be more polluted than the outside air. Additional research has also shown that we spend around 90 percent of our time indoors. Which is why paying attention to the air quality inside your home is so important.

The good news is there are a number of HVAC products available to homeowners that are designed to improve indoor air quality. If you’re unsure which solution would be best for your home, reach out to a trusted local HVAC technician for their advice and recommendation.

Enlist the help of an air purifier

One of the products we recommend to homeowners is a whole-house air purification system. Air purifiers clean and sanitize the air and are designed to reduce mold, bacteria and viruses, as well as pet dander, odors, air pollutants and smoke, noticeably improving the air in your home. We sell an air purification accessory called the Air Knight that mounts in the air ducts of your existing HVAC system and uses naturally occurring peroxides to kill viruses and bacteria in the airstream.

In addition to installing an air purifier there are two other products homeowners can use to help support healthy IAQ and reduce allergens in their home.

1. High-efficiency filters
Upgrading to high-efficiency furnace filters is an affordable way to improve indoor air quality. High-efficiency filters are able to collect more dirt, dust, mold and pollen than standard filters.

2. Air cleaner
A high-quality air cleaner will work with your current heating and cooling system to collect dust, dirt, mold, pollen and other pollutants. Bell Brothers offers the Dynamic air cleaner, which can remove up to 95 percent of particles from your home’s air. Once in place, it forms an electronic polarized-filter field that captures airborne particles as they pass through.
