Three ways you can take control of humidity levels in your home

By Jason Gassmann, President

Here in Iowa, humidity and summer go hand in hand. During this time of year, humidity levels can range anywhere from 52 to 82 percent.

The human body and your house are in a constant battle over what the humidity level should be. People are usually most comfortable when humidity levels remain right around 50 percent, and your house can’t handle much more than 60 percent. At that level you can start to encounter mold growth and other issues caused by moisture.

3 tips to keep humidity from ruining your comfort

  1. An air conditioner’s primary job is to dehumidify your home. The best way to dehumidify and cool your house is to make sure your air conditioner is maintained, properly sized for your home and running constantly throughout the day. If you’re replacing your air conditioner, we recommend a variable capacity unit. These models have the capability to go into dehumidification mode, automatically measuring the humidity in your house and turning on the AC at a lower capacity to dehumidify.
  2. Keep your windows shut. People love to run their AC during the day when it’s hot outside and open the windows at night when it’s cooler. Unfortunately, this is not great for humidity control in your home. Your air conditioning system spent the whole day adjusting to,and maintaining, an ideal humidity level. By opening the windows, that humidity level is immediately upset. The best thing to do is set your thermostat and leave the windows closed.
  3. If the first two tips don’t help keep humidity levels low, you might need to add a dehumidifier to your heating and cooling system. Look for an ENERGY STAR rated model, and put it in your basement next to the floor drain. Set it up so that it automatically drains into the floor drain so you don’t have to dump the bucket. If the bucket is full, the dehumidifier won’t function properly.
